The third oldest subway in the world and the only one ever hauled by cable, Glasgow Subway was opened by he Glasgow District Subway Company on December 14th 1896. By 1923 the system had been taken over by Glasgow Corporation Transport and was electrified in 1935.

May 1977, the subway closed for modernisation, the original trains, kept running by the ingenuity of the workshops, were well past the end of their working lives, and the stations were shabby and gloomy, something reflected in decreased passenger numbers.

Shortly before modernisation, the GGPTE {SPT} gave me permission to take pictures, although the nice lady on the phone clearly thought 'oh no, another photographer ' - suddenly everyone wanted to photograph the Subway!
